Arizona Tourist Information and Travel Guide
The Grand Canyon was carved by the Colorado River over millions of years. It is approximately 277 miles long and some 18 miles wide at parts.
The river runs through the canyon, a mile below the canyon rims.
The Colorado begins at La Poure Pass in the Colorado Rockies and drains water from some seven US states and two Mexican states before it finally drains into the Gulf of Mexico.
At the western end of the Grand Canyon, the Colorado River widens into Lake Mead, America's largest reservoir. The Hoover Dam is situated at the western end of the Lake, not far from Las Vegas Nevada.
